Big Brother is a serious game, but it knows when to have fun with its campiness. Houseguests don’t simply lose competitions; they can be dealt serious punishments, too.

The punishment costume is the twist that keeps on giving.

For a week, a houseguest (or two) is forced to wear a funny costume, sometimes completing tasks set forth by the theme. It’s weird, random, and so hilarious.

In Big Brother’s 26-year history, the show has put together some truly outrageous costumes.

Let’s take a look at some that have made their mark!

When you think of punishment costumes, the unitard is a must.

Ever since Jen wore the first-ever red unitard on Big Brother Season 8, this twist has been a Big Brother staple. Houseguests have since worn variations, some to hilarious ends.

Case in point: Candice wearing the clown unitard.

With colorful hair and a matching tutu, this costume matched the messiness of Big Brother Season 15.

Candice suffered the fate of wearing the costume, but we all won thanks to its iconic scene. Let’s never forget Candice calling out GinaMarie on Eviction Night!

After GinaMarie’s endless bullying and racism, Candice thankfully got the last laugh.

Whereas Candice only had to dress as a clown, Tommy’s Power of Veto punishment came with prosthetic props. This rocket-themed unitard required a heavy helmet and matching wings.

But the worst part? Tommy had to run through the house — in costume — with lights or stink bombs.

Sure, he had a blast! After a while, though, Tommy was ready to land this costume back in the storage room safely.

The costume didn’t look secure at all on Big Brother Season 21.

Nicole Franzel has the distinction (honor? punishment?) of wearing the most costumes during her time on Big Brother.

One such memorable favorite is the “Sloppies” costume.

Dressed in a large foam cereal box, Nicole wore an orange bodysuit and blonde wig to complete the look. For the second All Stars season, this costume was a great reminder of how special the returning players were to the game.

And how important it was not to win the loser prizes during the Power of Veto.

The large, bulky costumes are a mainstay on Big Brother now; they’re part of the fun. Back on Big Brother Season 22, this foreshadowed punishments to come.

Speaking of bulky costumes, the Hard-Broiled detective is on the case!

Just like many on the list so far, Vince was the victim of a POV punishment. During Big Brother Season 27 Week 5, he was awarded the egg costume for the week.

Vince was dressed as a giant egg, inspired by gritty noir true-crime detectives. Obviously, with the giant magnifying glass to match!

It was hard to sit, but Vince rolled with the punches. He didn’t crack under the pressure.

Sometimes, the punishment costume is more about the task than the costume itself.

The Lord of the Latrine is a cheeky, bathroom-based punishment that forces the wearer to announce whenever someone has to use the bathroom. Only the Lord can open the bathroom doors for people to use.

Dressed as a royal servant and carrying accents of bathroom props, the Lord must announce everyone.

At all times of the day. At both bathrooms in the house.

Derek X. on Big Brother Season 23 introduced this costume, but Melody on Big Brother Season 28 is the most recent victim.

Continuing with the serving theme, we had The BUTTler.

In a murder-mystery season like Big Brother Season 27, it was good to know that “the butler did it!” The costume left little to the imagination; even less to the space it took up.

Keanu, after a POV punishment, was treated to a butler costume with a comically large butt.

Part of the punishment was serving the other houseguests on his tray, but the real serving was jokes. How could you not laugh whenever the butt bumped into things?

If we’re talking truly outrageous, Sam The Robot goes down in Big Brother history.

Hell, maybe even all reality TV history? This costume was very unique.

After losing one of the first Big Brother Season 20 challenges, Sam was forced to switch places with a robot. (Yes, you read that right.)

She was kept away from the other houseguests; instead, a robot moved through the house. Sam chatted, interacted, and played the game as the robot.

You couldn’t help but have sympathy for her. This was tough, especially in the first week of an important game.

Another Big Brother tradition is pairing two houseguests for punishment costumes.

In this case, a pair of players would be tied together for almost 48 hours. They would have to do everything together, including wearing similar costumes.

The Adam & Eve costume is exactly what it sounds like!

On Big Brother Season 16, Caleb and Victoria wore leaf-inspired costumes and were shackled together with vines. This costume was perfect; Caleb couldn’t stand Victoria, but he was stuck with her.

She got under his skin with this punishment, more than he even realized.

Like the unitard, the “Adam & Eve” shackle punishment has been redesigned over several seasons.

Taylor and Joseph on Big Brother Season 24 got a musically inclined costume, taking inspiration from Sid & Nancy. The pair wore punk costumes head to toe, with a chain tying them together.

Their occasional fake accents were a bit cringe, but their romantic sparks made this punishment the perfect opportunity for shipping bliss.

On the other hand, the tethered costume punishment can be very uncomfortable.

Case in point: Felicia and Cirie moving around in a giant kayak!

For 48 hours, the women had to carry a giant green kayak and work together whenever they moved around the house. They could “dock” and sit without it. But whenever they moved, the kayak went with them.

And the paddles moved in unison to push them forward.

We can’t even make this up! The kayak was so funny to watch; the women worked their best, moving through all the tight spaces.

We can’t talk about funny without remembering The Whackstreet Boys.

Sure, the costumes were simple, but passion was there! This punishment was another twist on the experience, not the look.

After losing the Battle of the Block, Johnny Mac, Jason, and Liz got a 00’s boy band punishment.

The trio had to dress in all white, wear headset microphones, and perform a musical number for the houseguests. The speaker chose the locations, but the group had to perform for their “fans” whenever called upon.

The dance moves were on fire!

Between all the punishment tasks, sometimes Big Brother loves an old-fashioned costume. The humor is simply in the costume itself.

For instance, Casey dealt with a tough eviction week. But the cherry on his sundae was, in actuality, a banana.

After another POV punishment, he wore a banana costume.

Casey is a tough guy, and he didn’t let the game keep him down, even when he split from the Big Brother house—still dressed fully in a banana costume.

In a rare instance, a costume punishment comes from a Head of Household (HOH) loss!

Unfortunately, Adam drew the wrong ball after falling out early during an endurance competition. His punishment: He became the happy little holiday elf.

Cody, Jessica, and Jason had to hop around the house in costumes, staying on the lily pads when they weren’t moving.

What makes this twist even more hilarious is that Cody was evicted during Big Brother Season 19 Week 2. That’s right! He left the game in his frog costume.

Is anyone else seeing a pattern? The costumes might be cursed.

In Janelle’s case, her punishment costume didn’t take away from her rough time on Big Brother Season 22. All Stars 2 was going to be a terrible season.

As another costume to mark All Stars 2, she wore the mascot outfit: a big yellow star with glowing lights.

Sure, the costume was bulky, but Janelle made it her own. Plus, the costume came with the safety of not being nominated.

That’s a good trade-off for all things considered.

Sometimes the punishment costume helps your place in the game.

For eventual Big Brother Season 14 winner Ian, the costume helped him connect with his fellow houseguests. Sure, he had to live in a dog house and be held on a leash, but everyone else joined in on the joke.

Ian had a great time playing the puppy, and the other houseguests loved playing along.

But the true strength came from his ability to play up his naivety.

No one suspected the puppy of being untrustworthy or shady. Ian could hide in the background and plot new alliances, several of which shook up the game and eliminated big threats.

Now, we’re ending with a punishment costume that bit back in the worst ways.

In Big Brother Season 21’s summer camp-themed aesthetic, the evicted houseguests returned to the game. As punishment, the returnees were forced to wear ranger outfits.

The costumes set them apart from the other houseguests. They weren’t official players again; they had to earn their way back in.

The problem is that Big Brother Season 21 became a summer of racial microaggressions and bullying. The perpetrators inflicted their harm on specific players, and we were left with a stark reminder of how inequitable certain twists and seasons can be.
