This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 is one of 1,020 fastbacks produced for the model year. It was assembled at Ford’s Metuchen, New Jersey factory on January 15, 1968, and shipped to Ray Whitfield Ford in Taylor, Michigan. The car was originally specified in Highland Green with black knitted Décor bucket seats, the Visibility and Interior Décor groups, the Extra Cooling Package, wheel lip moldings, power-assisted steering and front discs, a Sport Deck rear seat, a tilt-away column, an AM radio, and a tachometer and trip odometer, and its 428ci V8 is linked to a C-6 automatic and a 3.50 conventional rear end. It was restored at a cost of over $140k around 2015 by Leadfoot Muscle Cars in Holland, Michigan, with work including disassembly, repainting the car and metal repairs, rebuilding the engine, and replacing trim items. Purchased by its current owner in 2022, this GT500 is now offered by The Shop Club Seattle, a BaT Local Partner, on consignment with a Deluxe Marti Report and a clean Texas title.
The GT500 model was equipped with a ducktail rear spoiler, fender extensions, air scoops on the sail and quarter panels, and a fiberglass ventilated hood with a ram-air scoop. This example is finished in Highland Green (R) with GT500 side stripes, and metal repairs were performed before it was restored around 2015. Trim was replaced and the bumpers were rechromed as part of the work.
Aluminum 10-spoke 15″ wheels wear Shelby Cobra center caps and are mounted with Goodyear Speedway tires measuring E70-15. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. The car is equipped with power steering, and stopping is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
The interior was specified with black knitted Décor bucket seats, the Visibility and Interior Décor groups, a Sport Deck rear seat, a tilt-away column, an AM radio, and a tachometer and trip odometer.
The woodgrain steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 68k miles, approximately 50 of which were added under current ownership.
The 428ci V8 was factory equipped with a four-barrel Holley carburetor and was rated at 360 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt as part of the work, and it was originally ordered with the Extra Cooling Package.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.50 rear end, both rebuilt as part of the decade-old restoration.
The Deluxe Marti Report displays the car’s original configuration.
Records from the restoration convey with the car, with a selection displayed in the gallery.
The title lists the car’s odometer reading as Exempt.
