Around 2 years ago I read a comment on this subreddit saying that one was officially a beginner when they reached 1600 rapid on chess.com, so I figured that was a good goal, and always planned to make a celebratory post here if I reached that elo. Long term, I would like to be able to be competitive with a cousin who is ~1700 on blitz. Given the rapid-to-blitz elo conversion, getting to 1800 rapid is probably where I'd need to be to take the occasional game from him.
I'm in my late 30s, so definitely got a late start. I remember playing a couple games in elementary and middle school, but I was clearly missing out on some of the basic rules.
I've never played a non-rapid game, and have played an embarrassing number of games - about an equal number on lichess, where I'm ~1800 (the free game analysis makes game review more fun there).
For something that brings me as much joy as chess, I'm irrationally concerned about stagnation or plateauing, but there's still so much low hanging fruit to address in all facets of my game, so that gives me hope going forward.
