Kenneth Okonkwo has sparked fresh reactions after sharing his assessment of President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during a recent interview, Okonkwo was asked to rate the three politicians based on whether they had, at different times, supported or endorsed one another for the presidency.
According to him, Atiku would come out on top with two points, while both Tinubu and Obi would score zero if the politicians were required to vote for one another instead of themselves.
Okonkwo explained that Tinubu had endorsed Atiku’s presidential ambition in 2007, while Obi also supported Atiku in 2019.
He said: “In 2007, Atiku had concluded his tenure as Vice President. Tinubu endorsed him to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In 2019, Atiku Abubakar was endorsed by Peter Obi to be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
He further pointed out that neither Tinubu nor Atiku had endorsed Obi for president, while Obi had also never endorsed Tinubu for the position.
Beyond the endorsement comparison, Okonkwo strongly defended Atiku’s political credentials, particularly his record as Vice President between 1999 and 2007.
He highlighted Atiku’s role in bringing experienced professionals into government, mentioning former Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former FCT Minister Nasir El-Rufai as examples.
“He co-opted the best in the whole world. That was when Okonjo-Iweala came on board. That was when El-Rufai was brought in to sanitize the FCT,” Okonkwo said.
He also credited the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in which Atiku served as Vice President, with improvements in security and economic management, as well as the repayment of Nigeria’s foreign debts.
“Nigerians have never had again the best as they had from 1999 to 2007,” Okonkwo declared.
He went on to argue that Nigeria’s international standing improved significantly during that period, saying the country moved from being a “pariah state” in 1999 to becoming “the darling of the whole world” by 2007.
