Why did no one tell 5-year-old me that being an adult is so hard?
If you were anything like me when I was a kid, all you wanted to do was grow up and have authority over your own life. The freedom of where to go, what to do, the world was my oyster and no one would be my boss. I was going to skip through my pre-teen and teen years, then go straight into astronaut academy and be the first purrson to land on Mars. In between space outings, I would drive my expensive car to fancy restaurants, order whatever I wanted, and go home and play video games until the sun rose.
Spoiler alert: none of those things actually happened. As you mature, you realize that being responsible for your own life isn't all it's cracked up to be. Adulting means making sure you pay your bills on time, going to the grocery store to make sure you have food in your fridge, cleaning out your cats' litter boxes, and waking up at 7 AM to get to work every day. Where was all that freedom we dreamed of? Was it all a lie from the very beginning?
The answer is no; it's not a lie, but it's not exactly the truth either. See, I could decide not to go to work and do whatever I wanted, but then I would have to deal with the consequences of those actions. You see, adulting is about finding joy in between the meowments of responsibility you take on throughout your life. I found my source of joy in adopting my cats. They give me a reason to wake up every day, they make my meowrnings full of love (and screaming), and they make me excited to come home every night.
