British police said they arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses near an air base used by the U.S. Air Force for operations in Iran.
The big picture: Officials declared a major incident and set up roadblocks overnight near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
State of play: Police received a call around 12.45 a.m. Sunday local time relating to "three suspicious vehicles" that appeared to be traveling towards the air base used by the U.S. 501st Combat Support Wing and the 420th Air Base Squadron, per a Metropolitan Police statement.
- Armed officers responded and arrested the men in the Whelford area "on suspicion of committing offenses under the Explosives Act" and they were further arrested "on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act," according to the statement.
