Vinland Saga initially looks like the kind of anime built around everything its story eventually comes to reject. It has vikings, bloody raids, brutal battles, revenge, and a young protagonist who spends years consumed by the desire to kill the man responsible for his father's death. On the surface, it's almost a perfect revenge epic. But beneath all that violence, Vinland Saga tells a very different story about what it means to reject violence entirely.
