A24’s Backrooms 2 Has Found Its Director, and It’s the Only Choice That Made Sense

A24 has officially revealed who will direct Backrooms 2. The news comes as no surprise to fans of the movie based on the internet horror concept. Following the massive theatrical success of the 2026 adaptation, the studio is doubling down on this franchise.

According to Dread Central, Kane Parsons will officially return to direct A24’s Backrooms 2. The sequel will follow the events of the 2026 movie and will dive deeper into the Backrooms lore beyond the yellow-walled liminal spaces. Moreover, it was previously reported that the director is actively looking for a screenwriter for the sequel.

Backrooms became a massive hit this year, as it earned $393.2 million during its theatrical run. The movie also holds an 87% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. It follows the story of a furniture store owner who enters an endless, monochromatic yellow labyrinth of uncanny liminal spaces through a hidden portal in his basement.

Why a Backrooms sequel always seemed inevitable for Kane Parsons

This announcement of Parsons returning to direct the sequel will be followed by an official statement soon, according to the source. Regardless, it was inevitable that Parsons would develop Backrooms 2, since he has been on it since he was 16.

The development of the sequel comes as a “dream scenario” for the director. In a previous interview, Parsons revealed that he would like to expand the Backrooms franchise. He said, “Without a doubt, Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film. If anything, I would say this is a bit of a foot in the door that would lead to more of a progression towards the true root of the narrative, which has been set up online for years.”

Backrooms started on YouTube in 2022 when a teenage Parsons uploaded “The Backrooms (Found Footage)” to his channel, Kane Pixels. The YouTuber uploaded analog horror shorts with his own interconnected stories.

The 21-year-old filmmaker’s contract for additional Backrooms projects is with A24, so more installments in the franchise can be expected. As of now, there is no official release date or additional news for the sequel.
