Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve reached a peak of 52,694 concurrent players on Steam on Saturday, October 3, setting the series’ biggest Steam launch. The milestone came one day after its official October 2 release, which followed three days of early access, according to Eurogamer.
That staggered rollout gave some players a head start before the full launch, but the record-setting peak arrived after the game was officially out. The date and pre-order details were also part of the game’s launch rollout.
A new PC benchmark for the seriesThe peak is a substantial step up from the previous Steam benchmark. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, which arrived on PC in 2019 days after its PS4 and Xbox One release, peaked at 13,758 concurrent players on Steam.
Gameplay from Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. That comparison carries some extra weight for a series that has historically been console-first: most earlier Ace Combat games never came to PC. The new entry’s Steam user rating was also listed as Very Positive, with more than 5,755 reviews in Eurogamer’s report. The outlet’s figures put the new peak at nearly four times Ace Combat 7’s, a neat bit of turbulence for the old PC ceiling.
Game Peak concurrent Steam players Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve 52,694 Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown 13,758 A strong debut, with one awkward bonusThe launch was not entirely free of friction. Eurogamer reported that players were disappointed to find that Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War, included as a pre-order bonus, was not a standalone app as they had been led to expect. Instead, players had to launch it through Ace Combat 8, creating problems for some.
Bandai Namco apologized for the misleading store wording and said it would explore possible solutions. The reported player-count milestone and Very Positive rating offer a snapshot of the game’s reception, but they do not establish that the bonus confusion had any particular effect on reviews.
The delivery issue is also relevant to how the older game is accessed: Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War’s Steam access is tied to Ace Combat 8 rather than a separate app.
Release dates and platformsAce Combat 8’s official launch was Friday, October 2, following three days of early access. It is available on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, though the report provides no console player counts to compare with the PC peak.
For now, 52,694 is the clearest measure of the series’ new Steam high-water mark. It leaves Ace Combat 7’s long-standing PC debut record well behind, and makes the staggered launch’s timing part of the story without needing to guess how many pilots were airborne on consoles.
