Good news, September 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants are just two weeks’ away. The country’s four-million elderly can mark Wednesday 2 September 2026 in their calendars for payment. For the first time in months, the wait time between disbursements remains manageable – just 29 days …
SEPTEMBER 2026 SASSA OLDER PERSON GRANTS How much will new SASSA minister Dina Pule fight for mid-year grant increases? Image: FileIn the penultimate month before October, attention is slowly turning to potential South African Social Security Agency increases. Older Person Grants were hiked by R80 back in April 2026:
- SASSA Old-Age Grants 60 to 74 years old – R2 400 (up from R2 320)
- SASSA Old-Age Grants 75 years and older – R2 420 (up from R2 340)
However, there is no confirmation yet on whether these will be amended again at the ‘halfway point’ in the grant cycle. Department of Social Development’s (DSD) new SASSA minister, Dina Pule, will have to argue her department’s case with the National Treasury in the next month.
HOW MUCH SHOULD GRANTS INCREASE BY?Nevertheless, September 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants will forge ahead at the same rate as before. Likewise, the agency’s strict review and eLife certification policies remain a top priority. SASSA CEO Temba Matlou told parliament recently that 300 000 profiles were identified as ‘suspect.’ And that savings of upwards of R170 million in the last year came through strict reviews.
However, that’s just a drop in the ocean versus the DSD’s underspend on social grants – a massive R4.8 billion in the same financial year. Therefore, simple calculations dictate that a split across four-million Older Person Grants could yield a R100 per month increase for a full year with no extra budget required. As a result, it is so important to keep your contact details up to date through the SASSA Services portal, so you know if and when you are under review and can rectify matters.
STRICTER REVIEWS SEPTEMBER 2026 SASSA OLDER PERSON GRANTS Beneficiaries report of more profile reviews and longer wait times to get them rectified. Image: FileAs reported by The South African, SASSA cross-references all personal data with other government departments and banks. Therefore, anyone claiming a government grant that shouldn’t be will be found out. Worse still, if you are caught misrepresenting your means, not only will you lose your grant, but you will have to pay back the money with interest.
For those who are reviewed by SASSA and clear their names, they receive a deferred payment on a fourth payment date. Next month this falls on Monday 7 September 2026. However, if you are found guilty of SASSA grant theft, you will have to pay back the money. This can be done in one lump-sum, which is most affordable. Or you can enter into a layaway plan with SASSA, incurring high interest rate penalties in the process.
