Anne Hathaway has revealed exactly when she plans to “vanish” from Hollywood and when she’ll return for her biggest action role yet. The actress shared her timeline for joining Tom Cruise on the Days of Thunder sequel and why she needs a break first.

The actress revealed her plans after wrapping up a busy year that included delivering five movies and her third child.
Hathaway said she intends to take a break before joining the production. “The movie comes out October 2nd, and on October 3rd, I’m going to like vanish in a plume of smoke, and you’re not going to see me until you have to,” she said about her upcoming film Verity. Hathaway added, “I’m definitely gonna disappear, take some time off. But then yes, but then I’m joining Tom on the track in March.”

Paramount Pictures announced the release date of the Days of Thunder sequel as June 2, 2028, back in August 2026. Tom Cruise and Hathaway jointly revealed the project’s pre-production status at that time. Hathaway will play a racecar team owner and engineer in the film.
Jonathan Levine entered talks to direct the sequel in July 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Will Staples wrote the screenplay for the racing follow-up. Filming was initially expected to begin in early 2027, aligning with Hathaway’s March timeline.
The original Days of Thunder hit theaters in 1990 and grossed $157.9 million worldwide. Tony Scott directed the first film, which also starred Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, and Michael Rooker. Cruise starred as rookie NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the original.
Variety first reported in November 2024 that Cruise was in final talks to star in and produce the sequel. Paramount is also developing the project concurrently with an untitled Top Gun: Maverick follow-up. Hathaway’s casting marks her first on-screen collaboration with Cruise in the long-awaited racing sequel.
