Hulu has opted not to order a second season of the single-camera comedy from creator Mindy Kaling. The decision comes nearly four months after the series debuted its nine-episode first season in June. It’s also an addition to a series of cancelled shows by Kaling.
Hulu has canceled Mindy Kaling’s Not Suitable for WorkWarner Bros. Television, the studio behind now-cancelled Not Suitable for Work, plans to shop the series to other potential buyers. The series followed a group of ambitious 20-somethings chasing career success and personal happiness in Murray Hill, Manhattan. Ella Hunt led the cast as AJ, an investment banker from Boston who relocates to New York for a new job. She moves in with her best friend Abby, an aspiring celebrity stylist played by Avantika (via Variety).
Across the hall live three male friends. Will Angus plays Davis, AJ’s co-worker who harbors romantic feelings for her. Jack Martin portrays Josh, a young journalist who benefits from family connections. Nicholas Duvernay rounds out the group as Kel, an aspiring actor who abandoned medical school. Jay Ellis also stars in the series.
Mindy Kaling created the show and executive produced alongside showrunner Charlie Grandy and Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment. The project fell under Kaling International, her production label with an overall deal at Warner Bros. Television.
The cancellation is another setback for Kaling’s television portfolio. HBO Max axed The Sex Lives of College Girls in March 2025 after three seasons. Velma, an animated series she executive produced and voiced, ended at Max after two seasons in 2024. Champions, which Kaling co-created for NBC, lasted only one season in 2018.
Not Suitable for Work held particular significance for Kaling. It represented her first sole creator credit since The Mindy Project. That earlier comedy faced a similar fate when Fox canceled it in 2015. Hulu stepped in and rescued the series, extending its run to six total seasons.
The pattern has not repeated here. At least not yet. Warner Bros. TV still holds the rights and plans to pitch the show elsewhere. Whether another platform bites remains an open question.
