Avengers: Doomsday is about to take a huge risk that will scare fans. However, it’s a necessary one.
At a Q&A following a screening of Avengers Endgame: Encore, Anthony Russo spoke about the “difficult process” of honoring Marvel‘s iconic characters while evolving them creatively. Finding the right balance is the challenge, but at the end of the day, the Russos must make changes to advance a story.
“We need to surprise ourselves in terms of who those characters are, where they can go, what they can do, what can happen, and in doing that, we hopefully surprise audiences as well,” Russo said via GamesRadar+.
Some fans might not want to hear it, but Russo is right. Avengers: Doomsday needs to advance the overall story, and if that means beloved characters need to experience changes, so be it.
Avengers: Doomsday needs to honor what audiences love while evolving the charactersAvengers: Doomsday is certainly relying on nostalgia to drive interest. From Thor and Steve Rogers to Loki and the original X-Men, Doomsday will feature dozens of characters from the MCU‘s past and present. It’s an Avengers movie, so it’s no surprise Marvel wants to bring in a large cast to team up and face a common enemy.
The abundance of characters becomes a problem when it’s used as nostalgia slop, for lack of a better word. If Doomsday is a showcase for recognizable characters to say their catchphrases while bringing nothing new to the table, it’s a failure, even if it’s a financial hit. Doomsday cannot just play the hits. It must take chances.
Casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom has easily been the Russos’ most polarizing decision. At first, I hated the idea of bringing Downey back because it would likely lead to the inevitable return of an Iron Man variant in Doomsday or Secret Wars. Enough time has passed, and I’ve warmed up to the idea of RDJ playing the villain. It’s an interesting decision I never expected. As an audience member, change is exciting, and seeing something new in Avengers: Doomsday is exactly what I want.
There will be fans upset with the Russos if they do anything to characters like Thor and Steve Rogers. That is going to happen no matter what. However, I don’t blame the Russos if they want to change things with those characters. That is character evolution that must happen. Fans have watched those characters for over a decade. The characters deserve a change to keep their story fresh and exciting.
At the end of the day, it’s about balance. The Russos must find that happy medium between nostalgia and change.
