A curious black bear wandered into a California library and reportedly raided a snack cabinet while the library was closed early last Wednesday.
Of course, the incident, which fittingly happened on the same day the world marked the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh , involved the bear helping itself to a jar of honey.
Mono County Free Libraries director Josef Bopp told local news outlet KMPH Fox 26 that the bear entered the Mammoth Lakes branch at about 6.10 a.m., four hours before opening time.
It reportedly headed straight for the staff snack supply, which included peanut butter, peach cups, cookies, and a jar of honey.
The bear then wandered around the library, browsing the new releases section and passing the reference desk, before leaving on its own.
Library appreciates an ‘enthusiastic patron’
The Mono County Office of Education shared surveillance footage of the furry bandit in a Facebook post , joking, “We can only assume the new Li-BEAR-ian was looking for a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh ,” which it noted was published 100 years ago that day.
“While we love an enthusiastic patron, and we understand the excitement of the centennial, we do remind patrons — and perhaps more importantly our bears — that snacks are not part of the circulating collection,” Bopp told KMPH Fox 26.
Published in Oct. 14, 1926, Winnie-the-Pooh was written by British author A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard and chronicled the adventures of an anthropomorphic teddy bear and his friends in the fictional Hundred Acre Wood.
