When a component needs a threaded connection point but has no thread to work with — thin sheet metal, hollow box sections, tubing accessible from only one side — the choice usually comes down to two options: a blind rivet nut or a threaded insert. They solve related problems but aren’t interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is a common source of rework on fabrication and assembly jobs.

A blind rivet nut, sometimes called a rivnut or nutsert, is installed into a pre-drilled hole and mechanically expanded from the accessible side using a dedicated installation tool, creating a fully threaded connection point even where the reverse side of the material can’t be reached at all. This makes it the standard solution wherever a bracket, panel, or piece of hardware needs to attach to a hollow or enclosed section — a common scenario in sheet metal fabrication, equipment enclosures, and structural tubing.

Threaded inserts like HeliCoil solve a different problem entirely: restoring or reinforcing an existing tapped hole that’s been stripped, damaged, or is prone to wear in a soft base material such as aluminium. Rather than creating a new thread where none existed, a thread insert repairs or upgrades a thread that was already there. If the base material was never tapped in the first place, a thread insert has nothing to work with — a rivet nut is the correct fastener for that scenario instead.

Sizing considerations differ between the two as well. Blind rivet nuts are specified by thread size, grip range (the material thickness range the nut is designed to clamp across), and installation hole diameter — getting grip range wrong relative to actual material thickness is the most common cause of a weak or incomplete installation. Thread inserts, by contrast, are specified by thread size, pitch, and insert length relative to the parent material thickness, with longer inserts generally required in thinner or softer base materials to maintain adequate holding strength.

Material choice follows similar logic for both fastener types: steel for general industrial use, stainless steel wherever moisture or corrosion resistance matters, and — specifically for rivet nuts — aluminium where weight or galvanic compatibility with an aluminium parent structure is a design consideration. For Singapore’s marine, offshore, and outdoor equipment sectors, stainless is generally worth the modest cost premium in either fastener category given how disproportionately expensive a corroded fastener failure tends to be relative to its original price.

Installation tooling also differs meaningfully. Rivet nuts require a dedicated hand, pneumatic, or battery tool to apply the axial expansion force; thread inserts require a matched STI tap and an installation tool designed specifically for coil-type inserts. Using the wrong or worn tool is a common cause of failed installations in both categories, and it’s worth checking tooling condition before assuming a batch of fasteners is faulty.

Before specifying either fastener, confirm which problem you’re actually solving: creating a new threaded connection point in previously unthreaded material calls for a blind rivet nut, while repairing or reinforcing an existing damaged thread calls for a thread insert instead. Getting this distinction right at the design or repair stage avoids ordering the wrong fastener type entirely, which is a more disruptive mistake to catch mid-assembly than a simple sizing error.
