There's a reason that Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton decided to take back the offensive play-calling reins ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Denver offense, namely Bo Nix, was struggling to an unsustainable degree, with the Broncos' season in danger of spiraling out of control.

It's only one game, but that, uh, didn't get fixed against the Chargers, even though the Broncos were able to win 23-17. The Broncos amassed just 224 total yards of offense, converted only one of 12 third downs, and generally looked pretty lost throughout the afternoon. Nix himself had only 123 passing yards while averaging a measly 4.5 yards per pass attempt.

In a credit to Nix, he was honest about his middling performance during his postgame press conference. There was no sugarcoating this one.

Nix being honest about his below-average play may well help him in the long run. They say you can't fix a problem if you can't admit it exists in the first place. At this point, all Nix and the Broncos can hope for is gradual progress and more positivity over time. Time is running out, of course, but the Broncos' offense and Nix don't have to look Super Bowl-caliber in early October.

It's how they'll look during the stretch run that will probably define the Broncos' season.
