Brad Pitt’s new survival thriller just walked into a box office battle it never saw coming. The film’s debut weekend numbers are in, revealing how it held up against a returning superhero giant and a fresh family rival.
Heart of the Beast crosses $50 million globally in its debutParamount’s wilderness thriller Heart of the Beast earned $50.1 million worldwide in its opening weekend, according to Variety. The film collected $30.1 million from 63 international markets. Meanwhile, it added a softer $20 million start in North America.
Brad Pitt stars as a retired veteran who survives an Alaskan plane crash with his trusted combat dog. Together, they navigate a brutal 58-mile trek to safety. David Ayer, known for The Beekeeper, directed the film.
Heart of the Beast carries a hefty $82 million budget. As a result, the film will rely on staying power and international interest to recoup its costs. Early reception has been positive. Critics gave the thriller an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences awarded it an “A-” CinemaScore grade.
Despite its debut, the film trailed the Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release, which topped both domestic and global charts. The Marvel blockbuster assembled $86 million globally, including $26 million in North America. Its lifetime tally now stands at $2.88 billion, just $39 million behind Avatar. It also ranks as the third-largest North American release of all time with $884 million.
Additionally, Endgame became only the second movie ever to clear $2 billion internationally. Disney reissued the film to build excitement for Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in December. “‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is poised for one of the biggest opening weekend performances of all time,” said Rentrack’s Paul Dergarabedian.
Elsewhere, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island struggled in its debut. The animated film earned $7.8 million from 34 international markets and $12.8 million domestically. Its global total reached just $20.6 million against an $80 million production budget. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado directed the story about two best friends stranded in a mystical world. H.E.R., Dave Franco and Jenny Slate lead the voice cast.
