Back-to-school didn't go as planned for this 16-year-old student, who's now facing a copyright issue with her school. Before class ended last semester, she entered a voluntary contest for a mural design that was going to go on the auditorium walls. Her design was positive and colorful, with the local birds flying around, windows, and sheet music. However, the idea didn't make the cut, and they sent her a rejection email.
Fast forward to this 2026 back-to-school season… the first day back, she went to the auditorium and discovered that her mural idea was painted on the walls, with some different details, but it was her idea after all. Although the birds were a different colour and the windows had a different structure, the idea was the same, and anyone who had seen the design was able to confirm this.
The girl's mother got upset and headed to the school because she wanted to talk to the principal about this issue. Neither of them wanted the mural taken down: they just wanted her name on it, since she's the one who actually invented it… and an apology, also, because they used her property without permission. The principal had all the arguments ready for her.
He said that submitting the design and entering the contest meant allowing the design to be "adapted for school use", and that just participating gave the school permission to do whatever they want with those ideas. Of course, none of this is detailed on the sheet the girl and the mom signed last semester, so it doesn't really add up… The principal also said they could add her name to the general list of the contest participants, but still doesn't credit her for the design.
Both are upset and really want to find a solution. The mother is actually considering hiring a lawyer to ask for some legal advice on how to proceed here. Although they think the issue is minor and maybe doesn't need to be escalated, the school is not admitting that what they did was wrong…
