Jaiswal had an altercation with Niroshan Dickwella in the first Test, which led to the latter’s dismissal off Prasidh Krishna in the 60th over of the second innings.
Here, Jaiswal was batting on 45 in the first innings of the second Test. He hit Asitha Fernando for three boundaries, but Fernando bowled him with the 17th over. The ball pitched on a length and came back in to take the inside edge on to the stumps.
The Sri Lankan fielders, led by Fernando, seemed to give Jaiswal a send-off. This did not sit well with Jaiswal, who was on his way back. He turned around to confront Fernando. Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva intervened to calm things down. Jaiswal then returned to the pavilion.
Can Jaiswal or Fernando be suspended? What does the ICC Code of Conduct say?
Clause 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct concerns “inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person during an international match”, and segregates all situations on the basis of four levels: 1 or 2 in the case of contact with players, player support personnel, or any other person, and 3 or 4 in the case of contact with umpires and match referees.
Clause 2.13, on the other hand, covers “personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person during an international match”. Levels 1 or 4 are not applicable here; Level 2 applies to personal abuse of an umpire or match referee; and Level 3 is available in all cases.
Going by that, it is very likely that if Jaiswal and Fernando are found guilty, it will almost certainly be under Level 1 or at most Level 2. If that is the case, they will get a warning and/or fine of up to 50 per cent of their match fees. Neither man has a prior recorded offence, and is likely to be suspended.
