Matthew Lillard has revealed the real-life story that inspired Mike Flanagan’s TV show, Carrie. The Prime Video series brings Stephen King’s classic horror story into the present day and explores the impact of bullying in the age of social media.

In an interview with The Direct, Lillard explained that Flanagan found a real-life story about an anonymous social media account causing problems in a town. He highlighted that the filmmaker “applied the archetype of Carrie on top of it,” and that he believes the approach is “completely relevant.”

The actor also noted that Mike’s version could introduce Carrie to viewers familiar with the character but not Stephen King’s original story. He said, “There’s a whole generation after generation that knows what Carrie is, but isn’t connected with the story,” and believes Flanagan “found an incredible way to tell it anew as of right now.”

Who does Matthew Lillard play in the new Carrie TV show?

Lillard plays Principal Henry Grayle, the head of Carrie’s high school. His position makes him one of the adults responsible for handling the problems affecting students as tensions at the school continue to rise.

Summer H. Howell plays Carrie, with Samantha Sloyan portraying her mother, Margaret White. The cast also includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, and Arthur Conti as Billy Nolan. Amber Midthunder plays gym teacher Rita Desjardin, while Tim Bagley portrays guidance counselor Peter Morton.

Mike Flanagan serves as the creator, writer, and executive producer of the series, which expands King’s story into an eight-episode television adaptation. Unlike earlier versions of Carrie, the Prime Video series has more time to develop its characters and explore Carrie’s life in the age of social media. The longer format also lets Flanagan expand the story and offer his own interpretation of Stephen King’s classic novel.
