You may have heard that the Department of Transportation is studying the feasibility of adding busway systems on other major thoroughfares around Metro Manila. Three corridors are reportedly in the running: C5, Quezon Avenue, and Ortigas-Aurora. All of which could “expand the success of the EDSA Busway,” according to DOTr undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor.

A potential C5 Busway will span 46km, with 88 stops along the way. Quezon Avenue’s system will extend 26.24km, offering 62 stops, while the Ortigas-Aurora corridor is expected to be 30.5km long with 65 stops.

While reports of the feasibility study are relatively recent, the Move As One Coalition quickly pointed out that these ideas are not new. The advocacy group then shared renders created by AltMobility Philippines, showing dedicated bus lanes added to high-traffic roads and highways.

In the same social media post, the Move As One Coalition further explained that exclusive public utility vehicle lanes would be more impactful to citizens with no cars. The group believes that opening bus lanes to jeepneys and other PUVs will give commuters even more flexibility in their journeys.

A similar initiative is already being explored as the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is considering adding buses to the Light Rail Transit Line 2. This is mostly to support rush-hour crowds, but these buses should also keep commuters moving if the train line becomes inoperable.

As we wait for more updates from the DOTr and other concerned agencies, we’ll pass this question on to you: Would you want to see more busway systems around Metro Manila? Sound off in the comments section.
