Coyote vs. Acme has turned a long and bumpy road to theaters into a solid theatrical run. The live-action/animated comedy has earned more than $80 million worldwide. Now, audiences who missed Wile E. Coyote’s latest legal battle will soon have another way to watch it.

Coyote vs. Acme releases on digital next week

Amazon will bring Coyote vs. Acme to digital platforms next week. The movie becomes available on September 28 at 9 p.m. PT, with a midnight ET release on September 29. That gives fans a quick home-viewing option after its theatrical run.

The movie puts Wile E. Coyote in a courtroom fight with Acme Corporation after another round of disastrous products leaves him seeking legal help. Will Forte plays the coyote’s lawyer, while John Cena portrays Acme’s defense attorney. Lana Condor also stars, with Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, and Porky Pig among the Looney Tunes characters appearing in the film.

Coyote vs. Acme had a long and winding road before it ever reached a screen. The whole idea traces back to Ian Frazier’s 1990 New Yorker piece, which flipped the Wile E. Coyote gag on its head by imagining him taking Acme to court over its endless parade of defective gadgets (via Complex).

James Gunn later saw the concept’s movie potential and pitched it to Warner Bros. in 2015. From there, the project went through several creative shake-ups before Dave Green eventually landed in the director’s chair, with Gunn, Samy Burch, and Jeremy Slater credited for the story.

Production was already well underway by spring 2022, with Warner Bros. shooting the live-action portions from March through May before bringing in the animated characters. However, the finished movie nearly vanished without ever reaching theaters after the studio considered taking it as a tax write-off. Forte said to The Hollywood Reporter that it was an “emotional roller coaster.”
