Dave Bautista‘s upcoming sci-fi comedy is already drawing comparisons to Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey. The production of Alpha Gang has taken the cast to remote locations, much like the filming of Nolan’s recent epic.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alpha Gang directors David and Nathan Zellner revealed that the movie was shot entirely at real locations. The filmmakers said they wanted to approach the movie with “absolute sincerity.”

“We went to these 2,000-year-old Roman fortresses and medieval church ruins and brutalist monuments,” David said. “We discovered these locations online and picked them before we went there. None of them are easy to get to, which is why they haven’t really been filmed to death, and they’re a real pain in the ass to go shoot at — but it made it really cool because it just gives it this kind of epic mythic kind of quality on a bigger scale.”

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was also filmed extensively on real locations across several countries. The director said that he chose real locations to capture the “physicality of the real world” and “how hard those journeys would have been for people.” (via Empire)

In addition to Bautista, Alpha Gang stars Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Léa Seydoux, Lily-Rose Depp, and more.

Meanwhile, fans are also excited for Dave Bautista to portray Kratos in the upcoming God of War series. The MCU star has already begun training to portray the iconic character. Bautista has replaced Ryan Hurst, who was recast after suffering a torn bicep while performing a stunt during filming.

God of War is based on the video game franchise of the same name. The series will follow Kratos and his young son, Atreus. They embark on a journey to the highest peak in the nine realms to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye.

“Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human,” the official logline adds.

God of War also stars Callum Vinson, Teresa Palmer, Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin, Ed Skrein, and more.
