The Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed an executive bill to institutionalise the payment of a 13th-month salary to public servants in the state.
The lawmakers described the move as “a major milestone in workers’ welfare,” saying it would provide statutory backing and greater certainty for the annual additional salary.
The bill scaled third reading during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor.
The Assembly suspended relevant standing orders to allow its immediate passage, following a motion by the Leader of the House, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, which was adopted.Speaking after the passage, Speaker Guwor commended members for the “bold step towards strengthening workers’ welfare in Delta State.”
He said the development further affirmed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration as welfare-oriented and worker-friendly, adding that the 13th-month salary “has come to stay.”
Guwor expressed confidence that the policy would boost workers’ morale, increase productivity and improve service delivery.
He also lauded the governor for initiating the measure as recognition of public servants’ contributions to the state’s development.
