Hi folks,
I am looking for advice and tips on finalising our internal layout.
Currently we flip things around in the kitchen and front room for spring and autumn, which is quite nice as it makes us vacuum and clean up and signifies the start of a new season. Our front room has a log burner and is a nice cosy space in winter, and a cool place to eat in summer when we put the dining table there, and at the other end of the house in the kitchen the large table is great for eating and chilling in the winter, and when swapped with the sofa in summer allows us to sit with the bi fold doors open on warmer days.
It’s difficult to get a picture of all of it, and things have changed (more junk) since some of these pics were taken, but hopefully you get enough of an idea of the layout of things.
The reason for me asking for advice and tips is it never feels ‘finished’ and I wonder if that’s because we move stuff around twice a year. The kids are getting older and slightly less likely to wreck the place so I want to make it feel more grown up and classy with more artwork and nice bits.
I have also thought about moving the grey sofa further into the middle of the tv room to allow for shelving for surround sound speakers and walking around the back of it (currently a space for kids toys) The main route at the moment through the front door is past the front of the tv into the kitchen, though I think if I did that it would be too close to the tv…
In my mind the best thing we can do is add dividing doors between the two lounges, to create a snug adult room and a tv room for kids, and getting some sheer net curtains for the bifold doors to block out sun in summer making it more comfortable to eat, and removing the necessity to swap stuff around. The dividing doors I have been procrastinating about for years. But I think that may be the change we need! You can see from some pics I used dividing shelves which worked quite nicely, but doors would be a more permanent fix.
Also thought about cramming the big sofa into the front room( it does fit) making it super cozy and extending the lounge table out in the middle section which would turn that into our main space and encourage us to eat around the table more rather than it be a dumping ground for stuff. This would properly separate the two lounges and remove the need for doors between them.
Any other ideas, tips advice on moving bits around to make it feel complete would be great. Please no “tv too high” this has caused me more stress than I wish to admit! 🤣 and was originally placed here because the electrician put the sockets too high, but has actually worked with the kids being little and the sideboard we bought!
The house is more full of plants and bits and bobs and artwork now also and does feel cosy, but I always feel something is missing!
Sorry for the massive brain dump!
Pic 1-front room winter
Pic 2- middle ‘TV Room’ and front room in winter mode (makes 2 lounges a bit awkward this is where we’d put dividing doors)
Pic 3 - same but with tv for perspective
Pic 4 - with dividing shelves
Pic 5 - same room but facing other way into kitchen
Pic 6 - more of same
Pic 7 - kitchen and bifold with table instead of sofa (table is now a big one that extends out)
Pic 8 - kitchen in summer mode with sofa
Pic 9 - sketched layout of summer and winter
Pic 10 - ideas
Thanks in advance.
