Drew Starkey just made the loudest possible quiet statement about American Psycho. The actor gave a “no comment” that teased everything, reigniting speculation over who will play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation.

I think I’ve read all of his scripts.” That answer does little to quiet speculation. Starkey has not confirmed a deal, but reading the screenplay has him within the casting conversation.
Additionally, the director is reportedly struggling to lock a lead actor. Austin Butler was previously speculated to be attached, but that path appears inactive. Patrick Schwarzenegger publicly campaigned for the role, posting “I’d love nothing more” in response to a fan suggestion. Other names have circulated, including Jacob Elordi and Connor Storrie.
Bret Easton Ellis addressed the difficulty on his podcast in February. He said “a couple of high-profile actors” had declined the part. He also stressed that Guadagnino’s take “is completely different from Mary Harron’s 2000 movie” and will bear “no resemblance” to it. Luca Guadagnino has reportedly revised the script multiple times. Lionsgate has grown restless. The studio has identified backup directors if the project stalls further.
Now, Starkey’s comments come at a critical moment. Guadagnino has not shot a film since summer 2024, ending a remarkable five-year production streak. American Psycho remains his most notorious pending project. Christian Bale, who originated the role in 2000, offered support to whoever takes it on. “Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
