The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun State of an alleged terrorist plot to attack places of worship, markets and other public gathering centres in a bid to disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections.
According to findings, the DSS held separate meetings with leaders of the Muslim community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Osogbo on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Officials shared intelligence indicating that terrorists planned to extend insecurity to the South-West and create fear and voter apathy ahead of the presidential election.
Religious leaders were advised to heighten security around their facilities. They were cautioned against allowing vehicles to park close to congregations during prayers or gatherings, permitting people to sleep in mosques, and remaining vigilant about suspicious commercial motorcycles and herders.
Night guards were recommended for every mosque, while churches were urged to strengthen security measures.
Intelligence reports suggested the attackers had mapped Osun State and planned to move through Kaduna and Jos before targeting the state.
Potential targets include churches, mosques, markets, schools, clubs and viewing centres.A report of the meeting with CAN, signed by the state assistant secretary, Ajayi J.K., confirmed the warnings and the call for tight security.
