A comedy movie starring Ed Helms and Jay Baruchel is now available for fans to watch in theaters. The historical comedy movie boasts a hilarious premise involving a stunt performer.
The Stunt Driver, directed and written by Michael Dowse, has begun its theatrical run. The movie is based on the 1981 documentary called The Devil at Your Heels. Apart from Helms and Baruchel, the movie also stars Ben Foster, Laurence Leboeuf, and Dan Bakkedahl.
What is The Stunt Driver with Ed Helms about?The Stunt Driver is a biographical movie about Ken Carter, dubbed ‘The Mad Canadian’ for his daredevil stunts. It follows his quest to jump across the St. Lawrence River, a feat he aims to achieve by using a rocket car and jumping off a 90-foot ramp. The distance that the jump would cover would be more than a mile.
Carter famously did not perform the jump, being replaced by his friend, American stuntman Kenny Powers, at the last minute. The jump was unsuccessful and caused Powers numerous serious injuries.
Dowse also helms the producer’s chair on the project, along with Jennifer Wilson, Macdara Kelleher, and Eoin Egan. Dowse and Wilson produced the movie through Canadian Films, while Kelleher and Egan represented Wild Atlantic Pictures. The movie first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2026, before becoming available to the public.
The movie has received a positive critical reception, currently sitting at 75% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic has “mixed to average” reviews for the film, scoring it a 58/100. However, Critics have praised Baruchel’s performance in the movie. Many have also pointed out that despite the comedic nature of the film, Baruchel plays Carter with respect and dignity.
