Police are seeking tips on the identity of a male suspect accused of betraying the confidence of an elderly woman before stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry from her residence in North York.

Toronto Police said the man went to an 80-year-old woman’s apartment in the Jane St.-Sheppard Ave. W. area on Aug. 26 at about 4:15 p.m. and told her that he was there to repair her apartment unit.

The woman let him in and he allegedly stole more than $5,000 worth of jewelry before leaving.

Police said the suspect is about 30 years old with a muscular build. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black pants, white and black shoes and eyeglasses.

They warned that there may be additional victims.

Cops respond to gun call at Cambridge mall

A 44-year-old Guelph man is facing weapon and mischief charges after cops responded to reports of a handgun at a Cambridge mall last week.

Waterloo Regional Police said officers responded to reports of a man with a firearm, which was believed to be a handgun at the time, at a mall on Hespeler Rd. on Friday at about 7:50 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found the man outside of the shopping mall and arrested him, while a BB gun was seized as well.

Police said no one was physically injured during the incident.

An unnamed Guelph man was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing a peace officer and mischief under $5,000.

He was being held in police custody for a bail hearing.
