This 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 3.8 is one of 45 built for the last two model years featuring the 3.8L M64/70 flat-six, and Chassis 398114 is reportedly the final example produced for the 1997 model year. It was delivered new to future IndyCar and American Le Mans Series driver Milka Duno in Venezuela for use in a national Carrera Cup series that failed to materialize. It was imported to the US in 1999, and spent the next 20 years under the ownership of four Porsche Club of America members before it was purchased by the current owner in 2020. A refurbishment performed under their ownership by Automobile Associates of Canton in Connecticut included mounting new tires, an overhaul of the chassis, and a repaint in white. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a G50 six-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential, and additional equipment includes center-lock 18″ Speedline wheels, an aluminum hood, a Turnwald rear wing, and polycarbonate quarter windows. Inside, the race-prepped cockpit features a Matter roll cage with door bars as well as a Recaro fixed-back bucket seat, a fire-suppression system, and a MOMO steering wheel. This 993 Carrera Cup is now offered on consignment in Arizona by 911r, a BaT Local Partner, with the repaired factory engine case, a set of four 18″ BBS E88 wheels, spare parts, records, and a bill of sale.
993 Cups were specified from the factory with lightweight glass, polycarbonate rear quarter windows, no impact beams in the doors, and an aluminum hood. The sound insulation, carpeting, headliner, power steering, hand brake, passenger seat, and heating system were also omitted, and a Matter FIA-approved roll cage was installed along with a splitter, raised rear wing, and tow points. This example was delivered from the factory in white, and a number of bodywork components were repaired and refinished in 2023.
Speedline Supercup 18″ wheels measuring 8.5″ and 10″ feature three-piece modular construction with magnesium centers and aluminum barrels. The center-lock wheels wear 235/40 front and 275/35 Toyo Proxes R888 tires that were mounted in 2024. A set of four 18″ BBS E88 wheels mounted with Pirelli PZero slicks is included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery.
993 Cup cars feature four-wheel independent suspension and a 70mm lower ride height than the contemporary 993 road car with height-adjustable coilovers featuring stiffer springs and dampers, and they received upgraded brakes and a five-channel ABS system with a motorsport control unit as well as air jacks. The calipers were repainted black and rebuilt in 2023.
The stripped cockpit houses a Recaro Pro Racer SPG XL HANS fixed-back bucket seat trimmed in black cloth and outfitted with a Schroth Racing harness. Additional equipment includes a fire-suppression system, an electrical cut-off switch, manual crank windows, and a wood driver’s floor panel. The interior was disassembled and dry ice-blasted before paintwork was performed in 2022. Replacement door panels with red RS-style pull straps were installed in August 2024.
The Porsche/MOMO steering wheel features a black microsuede-trimmed rim with a yellow centering stripe, and it and frames a rotated central 7,600-rpm tachometer, a 300-km/h speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 25k kilometers (~15k miles), approximately 1k of which (~600 miles) were added under current ownership.
The 3.8L air-cooled M64/70 flat-six features an aluminum crankcase and cylinder heads along with Bosch Motronic engine management, dry-sump lubrication, and twin-spark ignition. It was factory-rated at 315 horsepower. Photos of recent compression test readings are provided in the gallery.
The engine was rebuilt around a replacement case by Automobile Associates of Canton in 2017, who then overhauled the top end in October 2022. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a G50 six-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. A pair of mufflers is included in the sale.
