• Fiat will soon debut the all-new Argo X entry-level crossover in Brazil.
  • It is based on the EU-spec Grande Panda and will coexist with Argo.
  • It will be manufactured in Brazil with market-specific powertrains.

Fiat has announced a new model for South America, adopting the Argo X moniker. Despite what you may think, the subcompact crossover hatchback is unrelated to the aging Argo. Instead, it is a localized version of the European Grande Panda with minor styling changes, a simpler interior, and different powertrains.

Fiat has confirmed that the Argo X won’t serve as a replacement for the Argo, which has been around since 2017 with a mid-lifecycle update in 2022. The two models will coexist, offering Brazilian buyers two different options in the same segment.

The official teaser is focused on the headlights, taillights, and Argo X emblem. However, earlier prototype sightings have confirmed that the Argo X will be a rebadged version of the Grande Panda. The latter has been on sale in Europe since 2025, sharing its underpinnings with the Citroen C3.

Besides the new name, Fiat will give the Argo X different stampings for the doors and the tailgate, removing the embossed Panda and Fiat emblems. It has also been reported that the Brazilian model will adopt more muted colors for the interior, losing some of the playfulness of its European twin.

Fiat’s local marketing division interprets the pixel LEDs as X-shaped, justifying the name of the new model. Interestingly, only a single letter differentiates the Fiat Argo X from the completely unrelated Toyota Aygo X, although the Japanese model is not sold in South America.

Under the skin, the Smart Car architecture is carried over from the Grande Panda, but the Argo X will have different powertrains. More specifically, it will be powered by the 1.0-liter Firefly and Turboflex engines, with the latter adopting a 12V micro hybrid system. Depending on the configuration, power will be transmitted to the front axle via a five-speed manual or a CVT.

Unlike the Grande Panda which is produced in Serbia, the Argo X will be manufactured at the Stellantis Automotive Plant in Betim, Brazil. The official debut is expected later this year, celebrating Fiat’s 50 years of operation in the region.

The Italian brand is expected to bring more members of the Panda family in Brazil. The Fiat Grizzly and Grizzly Fastback will be next, most likely with different names and localized components. The SUV duo could serve as upmarket alternatives and indirect successors to the Pulse and Fastback.
