He might have rendered yeoman services to the Indian ODI side over the years, but Jadeja has fallen behind Axar in the pecking order of left-arm spin-bowling all-rounders in the format. He has not played an ODI since January 18, missing both the Afghanistan series at home and the England tour.
India recalling Jadeja for the West Indies ODIs has to do with the fact that Axar will be busy with the Asian Games, which will coincide with the ODI series. Even then, India backed Jadeja ahead of Harsh Dubey, who had got the nod against Afghanistan. It is probably an indication of Jadeja still being the second in line among cricketers of his genre. If Axar misses the 2027 World Cup for some reason, Jadeja’s experience may get him the spot.
Forced to switch Reddy to ODIs?
The best seam-bowling all-rounder by some distance, Hardik Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the 2026 IPL. With a year to go for the 2027 World Cup, India's focus is now naturally on ODIs. Pandya is in the India A “ODI” squad against Australia A, but even there his participation depends on medical clearance.
It was logical for India to give Reddy, the closest like-for-like replacement for Pandya, more game time in the format, especially since Pandya’s mid-tournament injury had completely disrupted their team combination during the 2023 edition. Thus, they withdrew Reddy from the Asian Games squad and included him for the ODIs. Expect him to play every match.
Dhir promoted after stunning Sher-e-Punjab run
This is Dhir’s first call-up to any Indian international squad. It came on the back of a stupendous outing at the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League, where he smashed 626 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 217. Only Abhishek scored at a quicker pace, but for 242 runs.
Like Hardik, Dhir too was part of the India A squad for the Australia A “ODIs”. While the Sher-e-Punjab (and the clash with the Asian Games) undoubtedly propelled him to the ODI squad, he has played for India A in the past, first for the 2025 Asia Cup Rising Stars, then in a couple of games against the 2026 T20 World Cup teams.
Nabi, Nigam plug crucial roles, Sarfaraz gets leadership role
Not only has Nabi been brilliant in the Ranji Trophy, but he also had an excellent season in the 2025/26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. His 14 wickets came at 22.85, but just as crucial were his 221 runs at 55.25 and a strike rate of 145. India have used Harshit Rana as a buffer between the bona fide all-rounders and the tail. But with Rana’s fitness a perennial concern, Nabi is an excellent backup option.
Nigam supplements his leg-breaks with boundary-hitting (he hits a four or a six every 4.18 balls). India have quite a few spinners who can hit, but none of them is a wrist-spinner. Naturally, they wanted to explore that avenue.
As an aside, Sarfaraz Khan fell out of contention some time ago and has not played Test cricket since November 2024. In August 2026, however, India recalled him to the squad for the Sri Lanka tour to replace the injured Sai Sudharsan. Now, he has been appointed Rest of India vice-captain in the Irani Cup. While not a game-changer, these things are usually indicators in Indian cricket.
End of the road for Shami and Bhuvneshwar?
Much has been written about Mohammed Shami’s potential comeback (in the media and on social media) to the Indian Test or ODI squad. His exclusion from both red-ball (Australia A “Tests” and Irani Cup) and 50-over (West Indies ODIs and Australia A “ODIs”), even in the absence of the T20I stars, is a near-certain indication of the end.
Similarly, despite his role in RCB’s twin titles (and, indeed, throughout his entire IPL stint), it is fair to assume that Bhuvneshwar Kumar will not play for India again.
