The Harry Potter TV show will sound very different from the movies. It’s because composer Hans Zimmer plans to create new music for the show instead of copying John Williams’ famous work.
While John Williams’ iconic music stays closely connected to the Wizarding World, Zimmer told Collider that he wants his new score to move in another direction.
The double Oscar-winner said, “I love the movies, and I love having fun with it. I can’t write like John Williams, but even if I could, I would try to stay away as far as possible and try to be original. So, does that sort of answer your question?”
Zimmer is creating the score with Kara Talve and Anže Rozman of Bleeding Fingers Music. The team will provide new music for HBO’s adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books. The series is scheduled to debut at Christmas 2026.

The main cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer portrays Professor McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu plays Snape, and Nick Frost takes on Hagrid.
The series is planned as a long-form adaptation of all seven books. HBO has described it as a faithful adaptation designed to explore more of Rowling’s original story.
The longer format will also give the first season more room to present the source material. Gardiner and Mylod have said they have eight hours to tell the first book. That lets the series explore details and characters the movies could not fully include. Peeves, who never appeared in the films, will also feature in the new adaptation.
