I saw this quote the other day that struck me— hard. I used to be a ferocious voracious reader. Ever since I was a kid. I won an award for reading more than 100 books in elementary school. I ended up studying literature for my bachelors. I was always reading. Then, one day, I stopped. For a decade. Maybe more?
Life got so hard. I had a falling out with basically my entire family. Became estranged from my mother and we haven’t spoken in an entire year. During that year, something within me changed. Suddenly, I found myself wanting to read a book. We were going on our first vacation in years and I wanted a beach read so I chose one (A Secret History).
I realized I wasn’t so consistently preoccupied and consumed with my toxic family. My narcissistic mother. All the problems that ensued from having a relationship with them. The constant drinking in order to deal with how difficult they are and needing to drink before being able to speak with them.
Suddenly in my life there was peace. Silence. A space for reading. A time when my mind didn’t have to be consumed with worry, anxiety, stress.
I have been reading non stop ever since. I bought an ereader. I cancelled subscriptions to tv streaming services. Basically, I healed so hard I started reading again. And I am grateful.
