Honda, Nissan formalize partnership to co-develop ECUs and software

Japanese carmakers Honda and Nissan have formalized a partnership to develop electronic control units (ECUs) and software for their next-generation vehicles. Reports about this joint venture first surfaced in June earlier this year, but now the dotted line has been signed, and we can expect these new technologies between 2028 and 2029.

By then, the pair should be rolling out their ‘software-defined vehicles,’ which should strengthen their respective competitiveness against emerging automakers. Ultimately, Honda and Nissan aim to stay ahead of the curve by standardizing ECUs, in-car operating systems, and vehicle software across their future products.

At the same time, the partnership also seeks to reduce costs while optimizing production of these new components. While it is unclear which nameplates will be the first to receive the new equipment, it is also worth considering where the collaborated technology will debut.

In the Chinese market, software-defined vehicles are rapidly gaining popularity, effectively making the country a cutthroat proving ground for new tech. Nissan and Honda also have established operations in China, with vehicles exclusive to the region.

A case could be made for the United States, as Nissan offices are readying five new SUVs under its recently revealed Family Strategy. As with the joint venture, the framework will enable different vehicles to use similar parts for more efficient development and production. An all-new Xterra is set to lead this string of releases.

Meanwhile, Honda is preparing the next-generation Ridgeline, which is slated for a substantial redesign. Notably, both Honda and Nissan’s upcoming releases are scheduled over the next two years, lining up with their 2028 fiscal year.
