The Best Sunscreens for Rosacea

Best Overall: EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

Category: Mineral (untinted) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 46 | Antioxidant Protection: Yes

This is one of my personal favorite sunscreens for rosacea, and two top skin experts give it their hard-to-earn recommendation. "This is one of my most recommended sunscreens for rosacea," says Maro Mehdi, RN at Alchemy 43. "It contains zinc oxide for broad-spectrum protection along with niacinamide, which helps calm visible redness and supports the skin barrier. It's lightweight, layers well under makeup, and is well tolerated by sensitive skin."

Tama Tran, MSN, NP-C, a Board-Certified Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner, agrees, saying it's "Specifically formulated for sensitive, acne-prone, and rosacea-prone skin." She also calls out its niacinamide content for its redness-reducing and barrier-strengthening qualities.

In my experience, it doesn't leave an outrageous white cast the way other 100% mineral formulas do. It's also lightweight, non-greasy, and doesn't smudge or pill under makeup. It's definitely the #1 pick for a rosacea-friendly sunscreen.

It really is clear, too. This is a picture I took of my bare skin, about 15 minutes after applying EltaMD's UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. (Image credit: @kaitlyn_mclintock)

Best Tinted: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra Light Face Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra Light Fluid SPF 50

Category: Mineral (tinted) | Finish: Matte | SPF: 50 | Antioxidant Protection: Yes

Three (count 'em, three!) skin experts recommend this tinted SPF because it protects the skin, is non-irritating, and offers lightweight coverage to help disguise patchy redness. "This is another excellent mineral option for rosacea-prone skin," Mehdi says. "It provides broad-spectrum UV protection, has a lightweight texture, and the tinted formula can help reduce the appearance of redness while minimizing the white cast that some mineral sunscreens leave behind."

Paula Brezavscek, PA-C, is a board-certified physician associate and founder of Azala Skin Clinic in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. She agrees that this La Roche-Posay pick is a gold standard. "It's a 100% mineral sunscreen that provides excellent broad-spectrum protection, and the tint helps minimize the appearance of redness without irritating sensitive skin," she says.

FYI: Tinted sunscreens contain iron oxides, which help protect against visible light—not just UV light. Tran says this may prevent hyperpigmentation. So, if you want a rosacea-friendly formula that also goes the extra mile to prevent dark spots, this is it.

Best SPF Serum: Pavïse Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30

Pavïse Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30

Category: Mineral (untinted) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 30 | Antioxidant Protection: Yes

If you have the budget to invest in a high-performance sunscreen that offers powerful antioxidant technology, Tran recommends Pavïse's Dynamic Age Defense SPF 30. "It’s an excellent option for sensitive skin and a favorite in my practice," she says.

So, what gives this sunscreen an almost $150 price tag? It's a high-powered skin serum that just happens to offer broad-spectrum SPF 30. With proprietary ingredients, plus tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and astaxanthin, it actually supports collagen synthesis and reverses past photo-damage for calmer, firmer, younger-looking skin.

Tower 28 SOS FaceGuard SPF 30

Tower 28 SOS Faceguard SPF 30

Category: Mineral (universal tint) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 30 | Antioxidant Protection: No

After so much trial and error, I can confidently say that Tower28's SOS Faceguard SPF 30 is one of my favorite sunscreens, just in general, but especially when I'm in the midst of a rosacea flare-up. The 100% mineral formula feels modern and elegant—it's lightweight, non-greasy, and hydrating. Meanwhile, non-nano zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum UV protection, a ceramide blend supports the skin barrier, and soothing ingredients (allantoin and alpha bisabolol) calm redness. It's a foolproof pick, and the internet agrees; the reviews for this product are overwhelmingly positive.

EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Broad Spectrum SPF 50

EltaMD UV Skin Recovery Broad Spectrum SPF 50

Category: Mineral (untinted) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 50 | Antioxidant Protection: No

Brezavscek has another EltaMD recommendation up her sleeve. This time, it's the brand's UV Skin Recovery Broad Spectrum SPF 50. "It was specifically developed for sensitive, redness-prone skin," she says. "It's a 100% mineral sunscreen that helps protect against UV damage while supporting the skin barrier and reducing visible redness." It's so gentle that it can be used post-procedure, which is why it's an excellent option for anyone with highly sensitive skin.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50

Category: Mineral (tinted) | Finish: Glowy | SPF: 50 | Antioxidant Protection: Yes

Here's another can't-miss tinted sunscreen. "I love this option because it's a 100% mineral sunscreen that also provides iron oxides, which offer additional protection against visible light," Mehdi says. "The flexible tint also helps neutralize redness without feeling heavy." Flexible, it is! I've found that this formula doesn't settle into fine lines or pores the way other tinted SPFs do. It moves with the skin, which gives it a natural, your-skin-but-better appearance.

Shiseido Urban Environment Mineral Clear Sunscreen SPF 50

Shiseido Urban Environment Mineral Clear Sunscreen SPF 50

Category: Mineral (untinted) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 50 | Antioxidant Protection: Yes

This editor-favorite sunscreen protects against free radicals caused by the potentially harmful pollutants common in city environments—think sun, car exhaust, etc. It's all thanks to a sheer-to-clear formula with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and ginkgo leaf extract. The last two are powerful antioxidants.

As for the texture, it's milky, lightweight, and hydrating, which is why it works so well with makeup. Whenever I apply foundation or concealer over it, it looks flawless—no creasing, caking, or pilling whatsoever.

Ultra Violette Future Screen SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Serum

Ultra Violette Future Screen SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Serum

Category: Mineral (universal tint) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 50 | Antioxidant Protection: Yes

This sunscreen serum, from the cool-girl brand Ultra Violette, has a subtle, universal tint for a smooth, seamless look. It also features Japanese zinc, which is a technologically advanced mineral filter that's lauded for its gentle, lightweight finish on the skin. Last but not least, squalane prevents moisture loss and vitamin E adds soothing antioxidant protection.

Kiehl's Better Screen Miner-All UV Serum Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Kiehl's Since 1851 Better Screen Miner-All UV Serum Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Category: Mineral (untinted) | Finish: Natural | SPF: 50| Antioxidant Protection: No

As far as mineral sunscreens go, I personally think this Kiehl's one is vastly underrated. The milky, serum-like texture sinks effortlessly into my skin, and I never (I repeat: never) deal with pilling, residue, or irritation. Aside from non-nano zinc, which gives it broad-spectrum sun protection, the hero ingredient is Centalla Asiastica—a plant extract known for its soothing and redness-relieving properties.

Goodal Heartleaf Soothing Zinc 100 Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

GOODAL Heartleaf Soothing Zinc 100 Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Category: Mineral (untinted) | Finish: Matte | SPF: 50 | Antioxidant Protection: No

Fun fact: Heartleaf is a trendy Korean ingredient used to soothe redness, irritation, and even acne. This sunscreen is chock-full of it, which explains why it's so comforting to my fiery, irritation-prone skin. It uses three kinds of zinc. Zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum sun protection. Zinc gluconate controls oil. Last but not least, zinc lactate provides a mild exfoliation effect. Together, they make this SPF a dream come true for rosacea, acne, and other inflammatory skin conditions.

What to Look For In a Sunscreen for Rosacea

All three experts agree that mineral sunscreens are best for rosacea, rather than chemical formulas. "Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide sit on the surface of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them, making them much less likely to cause irritation or trigger a flare," Mehdi says. "Many people with rosacea already have a compromised skin barrier, so choosing a gentle, non-irritating sunscreen can make a noticeable difference in keeping redness under control."

However, Tran says it's better to use any sunscreen than no sunscreen. So, if you'd rather skip mineral for chemical ones, feel free to do so. "The best sunscreen is ultimately the one you’ll wear consistently," Tran says. "If a chemical sunscreen is well tolerated and broad-spectrum, it’s still far better than skipping sunscreen altogether."

Aside from the category, it can be helpful to choose sunscreens that contain soothing ingredients. Think Centella Asiatica, allantoin, heartleaf, ectoin, and other gentle, inflammation-fighting ingredients. These will help prevent and soothe rosacea flare-ups.
