Peter Agada, the presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), has claimed that he and his team were behind the “consumption to production” concept adopted by Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election.
Agada, who served as the Director of Finance for the Obidient campaign in the 2023 election, made the claim while reflecting on his long-standing experience in policy development and Nigerian politics.
According to him, he has spent decades working on public policy and has contributed to policy documents and manifestos for several politicians who contested elective positions.
“There are things I’m struggling not to say here. A lot of these guys who are running for offices took documents off my table. Their manifestos, their programmes. I’m not junior to anybody. I started writing policies in Nigeria before some people even entered politics,” Agada said.
He also highlighted his years of experience with the Congress of Nigerian Professionals, saying he has been involved in policy work for about two to three decades.
“I run the Congress of Nigerian Professionals. This is 20 years. This is 30 years of practice,” he added.
When asked whether he was specifically referring to Peter Obi, Agada answered yes, claiming that he personally worked on policies for the former Anambra State governor.
“Of course, I wrote policies for Peter Obi. The consumption-to-production infrastructure was written by me and my team under Professor Pat Utomi,” he stated.
Agada further maintained that the idea originated from his team while they were working with Obi.
“Consumption-to-production infrastructure was from my table. Our time,” he added.
Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and made economic transformation a major part of his campaign message. His agenda emphasised moving Nigeria away from an economy heavily dependent on consumption and imports towards one driven by production, local manufacturing, agriculture and increased domestic economic activity.
