They always tend to shoe horn a last minute love interest rather than have the readers or viewers feel sorry for the dude who didn't get chosen which allows room for readers/viewers to feel like maybe the dude who didn't get chosen was better.
We see it in the summer i turned pretty, a last minute love interest Denise is given to Jeremiah as a consolation price for not getting Belly. We see it in never have i ever, Paxton gets a random love interest at the end also as a consolation price , we see it in the vampire diaries, they pair Stefan with the best friend of the MC, we sort of see it in the hunger games that Gale is kissing some other lips so we don't feel bad for him ( but ok hunger games is a bit different ). We sort of see it in twilight but that too was done a bit uniquely tbf. We also see it in the tv show Awkward and in Jane the virgin.
So there is the trope of giving the friend of the main girl to the dude who loses out ( vampire diaries ). For Twlight Bella has no friends so they have to give the daughter lol.
The reality is the love interest introduced at the end of the show or book , the readers or viewers just won't have the same emotional attachment to that character as the main girl so it kind of just doesn't work.
I feel like the authors or tv executives are not brave enough to depict the guy ( or woman if its a love triangle with 2 women and a dude which is quite rare ) actually just losing and feeling bad about it but but then trying to move on cause that is life sometimes you just don't get you want . They feel like everything has to tie neatly in a bow.
