Universal has moved fast to lock in the next project from the filmmaker behind the latest Insidious 6. The studio confirmed that the new horror feature Sleepover will hit theaters in late 2027, taking a date previously reserved for an untitled Blumhouse Atomic Monster release.

The announcement follows a strong global opening for Insidious: Out of the Further, which pulled in $60.3 million worldwide and pushed the franchise past $800 million in total box office.

Jacob Chase’s next horror movie Sleepover hits theaters next year

Director Jacob Chase of Insidious: Out of the Further will remain in business with Blumhouse Atomic Monster for this large-scale horror picture. He directs Sleepover from a script he co-wrote with Bryce McGuire, the filmmaker behind Night Swim. The story draws from McGuire’s original short story, and producers describe the project as the “quintessential sleepover nightmare.” Plot specifics remain under wraps, but the concept points toward a contained, high-concept terror built around a familiar childhood ritual.

Jason Blum produces the feature. Chase, McGuire, and Bea Sequeira serve as executive producers. Lilly Tyson oversees the project for Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Sleepover is a Cinescape Entertainment production, presented by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

Moreover, the swift scheduling signals strong studio confidence. Insidious: Out of the Further opened to $25.3 million domestically last weekend despite playing via Sony Screen Gems and Stage 6, a different distribution pipeline than Universal’s domestic operation.

The film’s performance possibly validated Chase’s approach to franchise material. He recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he ignored the pressure of helming Insidious 6 and instead treated the production with the ambition of a prestige picture. He said, “Look, I know it’s the sixth Insidious movie. Who cares? It’s just a franchise movie. But we didn’t treat it that way. I really treated Out of the Further like I was trying to make the Citizen Kane of Insidious movies, and it felt that way on set.”

Sleepover now sits as one of the earliest confirmed Jacob Chase releases for 2027.
