IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina returns to Wilmington on Saturday, Oct. 17, bringing thousands of athletes to the Port City’s waterways and streets for one of its biggest sporting events of the year.
A record 3,500 athletes have registered for the 17th edition of the race, which sold out months in advance.
For local Ironman race director Sami Winter, who has completed 138 triathlons herself, the event’s growing popularity is another milestone in its nearly two-decade history.
“We made it to year 17, that’s pretty crazy,” Winter said. “Little Wilmington, North Carolina sold out in five months, so that’s pretty awesome.”
According to Winter, the race’s May sellout was among the quickest of any Ironman event in North America this year. Organizers are celebrating the occasion with special race-week activities, including yoga aboard the Battleship North Carolina on Thursday night and a revamped race expo.

Athletes from across the country and abroad will descend on Wilmington for the competition, which has earned international recognition for its scenic and speedy 1.2-mile swim near Wrightsville Beach.
With thousands of athletes and spectators expected in the Port City, here’s everything to know about the course, weather forecast and traffic impacts ahead of Saturday’s IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina.
IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina course details for 2026Long before it carried the Ironman name, Wilmington’s signature triathlon was known as Beach2Battleship. The world's largest operator of mass-participation sports events purchased the event from the YMCA of Wilmington in 2016, and this year’s competition marks its 17th edition since debuting in 2006, with cancellations in 2018 due to Hurricane Florence and in 2020 because of COVID-19.
The race begins with perhaps its most celebrated feature: a 1.2-mile swim near Wrightsville Beach, ranked the No. 3 Best Swim Course in North America in the 2024 Ironman Athlete Choice Awards.
A rolling start at 7:10 a.m., with the fastest athletes entering the water first, kicks off the swim through Banks Channel, which connects to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Saltwater buoyancy and favorable currents have helped make the course a favorite among athletes chasing fast times.
From there, competitors transition to a 56-mile bike ride stretching from Wilmington into neighboring Pender County. Cyclists will cross Causeway Drive and travel along Eastwood Road before making their way through Market Street and College Road. They’ll then head east on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, eventually crossing the Cape Fear River and continuing onto U.S. 421.
The final leg brings athletes back to downtown Wilmington for a 13.1-mile run, ending at Water Street Park for the third consecutive year, with the Battleship North Carolina providing a picturesque backdrop across the Cape Fear River.
“The run course has been different every year for 17 years,” Winter said with a laugh. “This year I think it is a great course.”
The run, which has been ranked the fifth-best IRONMAN 70.3 run course in the world, begins on Front Street before briefly taking athletes along Wilmington’s Riverwalk. Runners then return to Front Street and head toward Greenfield Lake, where they’ll complete two laps along the tree-shaded path surrounding the lake.
The final stretch takes competitors back through downtown, onto the Riverwalk and across the finish line at Water Street Park.
Wilmington, NC weather forecast for Saturday, Oct. 17The weather appears ready to cooperate with the thousands of athletes descending on Wilmington this weekend.
Saturday’s forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-40s early in the morning before climbing into the upper 60s by the afternoon, offering cool conditions for competitors tackling the 70.3-mile course.
“It’s going to be perfect running weather,” Winter said. “It’s going to be cool, but it’s going to be perfect. High 60s is beautiful running weather.”
Water temperatures are currently estimated around 68 degrees, comfortably below Ironman’s 76.2-degree cutoff for wetsuit eligibility in age-group competition.
Wilmington traffic outlook for IRONMAN 70.3 North CarolinaWhile the race promises a busy weekend for Wilmington, thousands of athletes traveling through the Port City will also bring significant traffic disruptions Saturday.
Carolina Beach Road is a particularly difficult route for motorists heading downtown. Organizers strongly recommend using 17th Street instead.
“Do not drive on Carolina Beach Road and expect to get downtown,” Winter said.
