Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Glody Lilepo explained why he left the Soweto giants after 18 months at the club.

The 29-year-old Congolese was one of the team’s best players last season helping them to third place in the Betway Premiership.

Last month, he joined Libyan giants Al Ahly Benghazi.

Lilepo has spoken for the first time since leaving Kaizer Chiefs. He felt he deserved an increase after contributing to nearly 10 goals across all competitions.

“The only thing I put on the table was that I wanted an increase in my salary,” Lilepo told Soccer Laduma.

“I believed that I deserved it because I had become one of the important players in the team. I spoke to the manager (Kaizer Motaung Jr), but it was all in vain despite me explaining why I thought I deserved the increase. For me, the important thing was not simply to leave Chiefs for money. I wanted to play.”

Lilepo praises new Kaizer Chiefs coach

Despite his departure, the Congolese international feels the club is in a good place under Fernando Da Cruz

“I am happy with the team. They have signed a lot of good players. The coach has selected many new players who can bring change to the team,” Lilepo told Soccer Laduma.

“They have already played some games, so now we have to give them time and wish them good luck. We will see how they finish the league. But I believe strongly that the team can do well.

“When we left, the team was in third place, and now they have started again with a new team and new players. So, we have to give them time. I believe they can do well.”

With Lilepo gone, Kaizer Chiefs signed Langelihle Phili from Stellenbosch FC.
