Abiodun Ajayi, former Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government and Permanent Member III of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has stepped down from his position to fully commit to his role as Director-General of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s 2027 Senate campaign.

In a resignation letter dated August 31, 2026, and addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ajayi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the administration and contribute to the development of basic education in Ogun State.

“My decision to resign has been carefully considered and is principally borne out of my emerging political responsibilities,” Ajayi wrote, adding that it was more “honourable and responsible” to relinquish his appointment than attempt to balance competing obligations.

Speaking to Punch by telephone, Ajayi confirmed his resignation but dismissed speculation that it signaled a defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He explained that his new role was a continuation of his political partnership with Obasanjo, noting he had previously served as her campaign DG during her gubernatorial bid under APC.

Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is contesting the Ogun Central senatorial seat in 2027 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ajayi praised Governor Abiodun’s leadership, saying he remained grateful for the chance to serve in what he described as a “purposeful government.”
