Joel Embiid is not interested in watching the New York Knicks officially being given their championship rings on opening night.
The Philadelphia 76ers are set to take on the New York Knicks on opening night, which traditionally is the day NBA champions are given their rings.
The Knicks won the championship after a 53-year wait, which is why the city of New York will be extremely excited to see their stars get their rings and see the championship banner raised to the rafters.
While opponents on opening night have usually watched on while the champions are basking in glory, former MVP Joel Embiid will not be following the same trend.
Joel Embiid says he will be in the locker room during ring ceremonyEmbiid waved off his preseason in style as he scored 27 points in 29 minutes against the Boston Celtics to announce that he is ready to help Philly win the championship.
After the game against the Boston Celtics, Embiid was asked if it was intriguing to face the Knicks on opening night.
He replied: “I don’t really feel like watching the whole ceremony, so I guess I’ll be in the locker room.”
Embiid then went on to give his account of how he plans to navigate the remainder of the season.
His disinterest in watching the opening ceremony could stem from the fact that the Knicks defeated the 76ers on their way to winning the championship.
Embiid managed to play in three of the games, but was kept quiet by the Knicks as he shot well in only one game, which was Game 4, and even that matchup ended 144-114 in favour of the New Yorkers. Their dominant win there helped them complete a sweep and move into the Conference Finals, where they then went on to sweep the Cleveland Cavaliers before meeting the San Antonio Spurs and beating them 4-1 to win the Larry O’Brien trophy.
