John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando gets a brand new mode in a big free update

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando has received its second major free update, adding a brand-new Retrieval Mode alongside new enemies, weapons, movement options, vehicle improvements and more.

The Retrieval Update introduces a new challenge built around grabbing relics and getting out alive before the zombie hordes overwhelm you.

Retrieval Mode lets players choose a map before setting out to collect relics and make their way towards an extraction point. Hanging around for too long is a bad idea, however, as doing so attracts the attention of the Sludge.

The mode currently supports four maps: Church of the Damned, High Octane, Impasse and Demon Bait.

It sounds like a neat change of pace from Toxic Commando’s regular missions, particularly if you have already spent plenty of time mowing through the undead since launch. Now the real question becomes exactly how greedy you’re willing to be before making a run for safety. The answer? Preeeeety greedy.

The update also introduces a particularly annoying-sounding new zombie type called Goblins. These smaller enemies attack in groups of three and focus their attention on the same target. More importantly, they can revive one another as long as at least one member of the group remains alive, meaning you’ll want to make sure you finish the entire pack off.

Players also have four new tools for dealing with them.

The Le Clairon assault rifle and Flamethrower join the weapon roster, alongside the Thunderstick and Saw Trap for anybody who prefers a slightly messier approach to zombie disposal.

One of the more significant general gameplay additions is the introduction of a Dash ability, while the update also kicks off Trials Season 2. PC local servers have been added, and Saber Interactive says both vehicles and AI-controlled bots have received improvements.

Alongside the free content, a separate Cosmetic Pack 2 DLC is now available and is included as part of the Bloody Season Pass. Its character skins, headgear, weapon skins and vehicle cosmetics are themed around the Sludge God, with additional profile titles and icons also included.

Toxic Commando is also heading into Fortnite, sort of. Walter Irons will be available in Fortnite from September 5 at 8PM ET / 5PM PT, with the promotion available to owners of John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando through the Epic Games Store.
