I must say I was really disappointed by it. The movie was meaningless and meandering. It feels like Spielberg is out of touch with the Zeitgeist on sci-fi storytelling. He fell back in his decades-old formula and failed spectacularly on delivering on both, a compelling alien exposé and a touching personal/emotional saga.
The maddening simplicity of the details felt lazy and devoid of novelty. I kept asking myself at many points during the watching if I should change the channel and cut my losses. Spielberg sadly appears to think that he still has the same audience he had of The Close Encounter and ET. The sheer number of sci-fi movies and series on streaming services over the past 15 odd years has advanced the art of this genre far beyond that. Truly a lost opportunity by one of our generation’s best movie makers.
I would not recommend this movie even to a casual viewer. There are many better alternatives like Arrival, District 9, and Annihilation, among others to invest your time and well-earned money in.
