Ghost Galaxy has announced KeyForge Online, a digital adaptation of its unique deck card game, with independent studio Yellow King developing the project under license. A Gamefound crowdfunding campaign is scheduled to launch before the end of 2026, with a Steam release targeted for 2028 – similar in spirit to how Riftbound’s own digital client ambitions have shown that moving a physical card game onto PC is rarely a quick turnaround.

KeyForge originally launched in 2018 under Fantasy Flight Games, created by Richard Garfield, the designer also behind Magic: The Gathering. Its hook remains one of the more elegant ideas in modern card games: every 36-card deck is algorithmically generated from three Houses, meaning no two players in the world own an identical deck, and on each turn you declare a single House active and can only play that faction’s cards until your next turn. It’s a premise that still stands out in a genre increasingly crowded by digital-first competitors like Pokémon TCG Pocket.

That premise nearly killed the game. Fantasy Flight put KeyForge on indefinite hiatus in 2021 after a fault in the deck-generation algorithm left the publisher unable to produce new decks, and no further sets released during the hiatus. Ghost Galaxy acquired the property in 2022 and revived it through crowdfunding campaigns that funded three additional card sets, the most recent of which released in 2025.

What’s Actually Confirmed

According to Yellow King, the digital adaptation is meant to preserve KeyForge’s strategy, unpredictability, and endless deck discovery while adding new visual effects and animation built specifically for the format. On the more concrete side, existing tournament-legal physical decks will be playable in KeyForge Online, and additional decks will be available to purchase within the game itself.

What’s still unclear is how digital-only decks will relate to physical ones and how the two catalogs will connect – fans have raised the question publicly, and Yellow King hasn’t answered it yet. The studio says more detail is coming at KeyForge Celebration 2026, which is shaping up to be the real reveal point rather than this announcement.

Milestone Target Gamefound crowdfunding campaign Before end of 2026 KeyForge Celebration 2026 Additional details expected KeyForge Online on Steam Targeted for 2028 A 2028 Target, Not a Promise

None of this is a confirmed launch date – it’s a target attached to a crowdfunding campaign that hasn’t even opened yet. Plenty of games have slipped between a Gamefound pitch and a Steam page, and KeyForge’s own history of a broken algorithm and a multi-year hiatus is proof enough that this project has room to wobble before it ships, the way other PC debuts have found out the hard way.

For now, the timeline is simple: a Gamefound campaign lands sometime before the end of 2026, and if it succeeds, Steam follows in 2028, according to the Gamefound project page. Everything else – pricing, deck economy, how physical and digital collections actually talk to each other – waits for KeyForge Celebration 2026.
