Coraline and ParaNorman producer Laika‘s new stop-motion film has received a surprise rating. This would mark a first for the American stop-motion studio.
Wildwood, which hits theatres on October 23, 2026, will be Laika’s first film to receive a PG-13 rating. The MPA has justified the rating, citing “strong fantasy violence/bloody images, thematic material, suicide-related material, brief partial nudity and language” in the film’s material, according to World of Reel.
What else do we know about Laika’s new Wildwood movie?
Laika describes the stop-motion animated film as a “tale of love, loss, sacrifice, and secrets, and of the magic you can find on your doorstep, if you’re willing to look for it.”
The story follows Prue McKeel (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her classmate Curtis Mehlberg (Jacob Tremblay) as they embark on a quest to rescue Prue’s infant brother from an enchanted forest outside Portland. The voice cast includes some industry heavyweights, such as Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, and Amandla Stenberg, among others.
The film is directed by Travis Knight and is based on a book that was illustrated by Carson Ellis and penned by the Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy.
Knight opened up about the process of making the film, specifically contrasting the stop-motion medium with animation made by generative AI. Speaking in an EW featurette, he said, “At a time when entire worlds can be built with a click of a mouse and videos generated from a prompt, choosing to make a stop-motion film feels like a quiet act of rebellion.” He further stated, “Wildwood is by far the most challenging we’ve ever taken on. And I think it’s gonna be the most beautiful thing we’ve ever done.”
Wildwood will be the sixth film produced by Laika, which will join the ranks of their critically acclaimed library, which, apart from including ParaNorman and Coraline, also includes hits like Kubo and the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, and Missing Link.
