HBO’s Lanterns takes a bold new approach to John Stewart’s backstory. Episode 3 reveals that his path to becoming a Green Lantern stems from family trauma and a father’s failed ambition. The series rejects the idea that a Lantern must be fearless, instead showing that embracing fear makes John a stronger candidate.

Lanterns wanted John Stewart to have a defining superhero origin of his own

John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) does not stumble into his destiny. His father, John Stewart Sr. (J. Alphonse Nicholson), failed to become a Green Lantern because he feared leaving his family behind. That failure haunts him. He trains young John to suppress fear at all costs. The training includes shooting apples off his son’s head and leaving him alone in the city at night to find his own way home.

But the show flips this idea on its head. Vanessa Baden-Kelly, who wrote episode 3, explained to ScreenRant that John Sr.’s fear actually makes him brave. He refused to abandon his family, and that choice reflects strength, not weakness. She also said the Guardians’ method of selecting Lanterns is flawed. “Having those emotions, having those things that guide you on what you should and shouldn’t do, feeling humanity, and feeling emotions actually makes you more apt for the job than lacking them,” Baden-Kelly stated.

This philosophy drives John’s journey. When he meets Lianna (Laura Linney), a Guardian, he admits that loving his family is part of being human. Lianna struggles to understand this attachment. Yet John’s honesty impresses her. The Guardians choose him to replace Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), a decision that creates tension between the two men.

The series uses this origin to separate John from other Green Lanterns. He does not lack fear. He feels it deeply and still moves forward. That distinction matters. It gives John a unique identity and sets up his role in future DC projects like Man of Tomorrow.
