The Lanterns finale trailer hints that one Green Lantern’s story might not be over, and a new threat may be rising. HBO dropped a first look at the Season 1 finale, teasing a possible return and the arrival of a fear-fueled force from DC lore.

Notably, the 39-second promo centers on fear, the emotion that powers the Yellow Lantern Corps in DC Comics lore. Episode 8, titled “Dirt and Stars,” premieres Sunday, October 4, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.

In the series, Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart grew up with parents who trained him to be fearless from age five. Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan trained under Thaal Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen), who went rogue after yellow fear energy consumed him. Sinestro killed one of the twelve Guardians during a failed coup, which ultimately led to his expulsion from the Corps.
The finale follows Episode 7, “The Jordan Boys Legacy,” which Alik Sakharov directed and HBO aired on September 27. In that episode, John and Hal’s hologram discovered a portal to another planet hidden inside Hal’s voice-locked storage vault. Then, after reaching an island on Antaan’s home world, they entered its central structure and came face-to-face with Sinestro himself.
Meanwhile, the mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s 2026 death in Rushville, Nebraska, remains unsolved heading into the season’s final hour. Specifically, Episode 7 revealed a Jordan family history of depression, leading John to suspect Hal may have died by suicide. In Episode 6, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner also revealed that Sinestro had escaped from his prison in outer space.
Co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King wrote the finale, just as they previously co-wrote the series’ pilot. Additionally, Christopher Cantwell has joined Mundy as co-showrunner, while a writers’ room is already developing a potential second season.
