Kent Jones directed the film from a screenplay by Samy Burch. Notably, the script adapts Arthur Schnitzler’s posthumously published novella of the same name. Late Fame follows Ed Saxberger, a postal worker living in obscurity in downtown Manhattan. Eventually, a wealthy NYU graduate named Meyers discovers Ed’s 1970s poetry collection and introduces him to a group of young writers. As a result, Ed navigates this sudden attention while forming a connection with a mercurial actress named Gloria.
The film stars Dafoe alongside Greta Lee and Edmund Donovan. Initially, Sandra Hüller was cast, but Lee replaced her in October 2024 after Hüller dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Subsequently, principal photography began the week of January 22, 2025, in New York and New Jersey. The supporting cast also includes Jake Lacy, Clark Johnson and Luca Padovan.
Late Fame premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2025. It then screened at the 2025 New York Film Festival on September 28, 2025.
